KEEPING YOU UP-TO-DATE ON THE SOUTH COAST |
Phelisa Mangcu |
CEO of South Coast
Tourism & Investment Enterprise (SCTIE) |
After three years of interrupted tourism seasons, we are finally looking forward to welcoming holidaymakers to the KZN South Coast, for what we expect to be a bumper festive season! |
We are fortunate in that all of our beaches are open and safe for bathing, and we have the esteemed title of being home to the highest number of Blue Flag Beaches in the entire province. This year, we also welcomed the announcement that a further five of our beaches have attained Blue Flag Pilot Status. Being an internationally recognised status, this is fantastic news for the KZN South Coast. |
The first quarter as the newly formed South Coast Tourism & Investment Enterprise (SCTIE), has been incredibly productive. Alongside our many tourism offerings, we have had the opportunity to promote the KZN South Coast’s massive investment potential within the logistics, agriculture, ocean economy, manufacturing and real estate sectors, among many others. The relaunch of Margate Airport in November is a massive boost for the tourism and investment of the region, and we look forward to growing these in the months and years to come. |
Our annual tradition, the Mayoral Roadblock will see Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM), Mayor Sikhumbuzo Mqadi, (supported by SCTIE) officially welcoming visitors to our shores, for what we anticipate to be an incredible festive season. |
Read on, to find out what we have achieved so far, and our plans to unlock further tourism and investment opportunities in the future. |
We want to take this opportunity to thank Tidy Towns, Keep Scottburgh Beautiful, Conservancies, residents and others that work tirelessly to help to ensure that our coast is beautiful and ready to welcome visitors. |
From the SCTIE team and myself, we would like to wish you a happy festive season and a prosperous New Year!

To boost our investment portfolio, SCTIE has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Trade & Investment KwaZulu-Natal (TIKZN). This will not only potentially position us as a ‘One Stop Shop’ for investment, but also combine our marketing and investor facilitation services through incentive schemes, tourism support, and identifying agro-processing opportunities. |

Public Relations Update |
In addition to sharing positive messaging around the KZN South Coast’s tourism and investment offerings through the #SummerReady and #UnlimitedOpportunities, we have attended to crisis PR and reputation management around the state of KZN South Coast beaches. Misunderstandings following media reports on the closure of Durban beaches led to the misapprehension by some that our beaches were also closed. |
We are aware of the damaging effect this had on our KZN South Coast businesses, as we received reports of cancellations. We addressed the situation immediately, the relevant media were approached with our CEO’s SCTIE comments and Blue Flag status; this was included in publications such as the Rapport and Sunday Times. We are continuing to share the messaging about our beaches being safe and open through press releases and digital platforms. Our message is that we are #SummerReady, all of our beaches are open and we are ready to welcome visitors. |

Covid-19 Protocols |
The national regulations relating to Covid-19 have been lifted, but adequate ventilation, vaccinations and maintaining hygienic standards for all travellers and KZN South Coast tourism operators remain key to preventing further viral spread. To support this effort, we have created downloadable A4, A5 and A3 posters, reminding establishments and travellers to choose to sanitise or wear a mask. These are simply guidelines. |
